Minneapolis, MN - The Healthcare Career Advancement Program (H-CAP) held its biennial conference featuring cutting-edge presentations on workforce innovations and best practices in promoting high quality care. Minnesota’s HealthPartners and SEIU Healthcare Minnesota welcomed an audience of 110 healthcare labor, employer, education, and workforce leaders speaking about their strong labor/management partnerships working to support the workforce needed for quality care in challenging times. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry credited labor/management collaboration in developing the workforce of the future in a changing healthcare environment, promoting career advancement (through programs such as Registered Apprenticeship), and building needed workforce pipelines.
Panels included healthcare industry experts discussing timely topics on interprofessional practice and education, skills for frontline workers in behavioral health, innovations in home care training and integration into a managed care model, and a spotlight on pioneering Registered Apprenticeship programs in Minnesota and Rhode Island. Poster sessions were presented on labor/management training innovations, such as care of transgender patients, nursing home resident decline detection, digital fluency and technology, patient safety and environmental service workers, developing pre-apprenticeship program in behavioral health, and mentorship considerations in Registered Apprenticeships.
The day concluded with some highlights on the work H-CAP has done to provide technical assistance nationwide through a National Industry Partner contract awarded in 2016 from the U.S. Department of Labor to increase the adoption of Registered Apprenticeships in the healthcare industry. H-CAP’s contract was recently renewed by the U.S. Department of Labor, as the sole intermediary in healthcare occupations.
The Healthcare Career Advancement Program (H-CAP) is a national labor/management organization that promotes innovation and quality in healthcare career education. Its board includes Service Employees International Union (SEIU) locals and healthcare employers across all sectors of healthcare in 15 states and Washington, D.C. H-CAP shares best practices in workforce development and planning, aligns healthcare professional education with industry needs, addresses changes in healthcare technology and their workforce implications, and develops programs that combine career advancement with quality outcomes.
