MICHIGAN NURSING HOME
STABILIZATION GRANT

The State of Michigan launched a pioneering initiative to address the critical workforce shortages in nursing homes by awarding a $25 million grant to H-CAP. This significant investment comes at a crucial time when nursing homes across the state continue to grapple with staffing challenges that were intensified during the pandemic, affecting both worker retention and quality of care.

The comprehensive program focuses on multiple key areas to stabilize and strengthen the nursing home workforce. These include enhancing worker benefits packages, implementing mentor-based training programs led by experienced staff, and developing worker-centered professional development initiatives. The program also emphasizes the importance of providing essential wraparound support such as transportation, housing, and childcare assistance to address the holistic needs of nursing home workers.

At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to fostering strong labor-management partnerships that prioritize both job quality and care excellence. By upgrading infrastructure and operational systems while simultaneously investing in the workforce, the program aims to create more attractive, efficient work environments that benefit both caregivers and residents. This multifaceted approach recognizes that solving the staffing crisis requires addressing both immediate needs and long-term structural challenges in the nursing home sector.
