When Hope first noticed the posting about the free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program on his employer’s bulletin board at MediLodge of Ludington, Michigan, he honestly wasn't sure what to make of it. “It was when H-CAP Coordinator Liz came by and explained all the different programs that everything clicked for me,” he explains. “Having someone walk me through the opportunities made all the difference.”
Through the Michigan Nursing Home Stabilization program, Hope was able to train as a CNA and complete all the certification requirements needed to start work. The financial assistance from the program was a huge part of his success.
"CNA programs are really expensive,” Hope says, “and without the program covering my tuition fees, I honestly don't know how I would have managed it. On top of that, the monthly reimbursements for my expenses helped me get by during training, taking off some of the pressure so I could focus on my studies.”
Asked about his motivation for becoming a CNA, Hope was clear about his reasoning, stating, “I wanted to pursue a career, improve myself, and keep improving as long as I can. This program gave me exactly the support I needed to make that happen.” Hope talks about his accomplishment with pride.
“Three days ago, I officially became a CNA, and I can't describe how good that feels. What excites me most is knowing that in healthcare, being a CNA means you can work anywhere—in a clinic, hospital, long-term care, assisted living. The possibilities are endless.”
But Hope isn’t ready to stop his journey yet. He’s already working on getting into the LPN program. “I’m really hoping to become an RN someday,” he explains. “I have a scholarship application in the program’s approval process right now, which would help me get there.”
When asked about his advice for someone interested in the Nursing Home Stabilization Program, Hope ventured, “Everyone is different. I am open to anything. If I can do it, anyone can do it as long as they put in the work. My thinking is, why stop at one point along the way if you can keep learning and growing? Why stick to one thing if you can learn to do both?"

The program offers workers not only an opportunity to get more education, but also enter a career pathway to good, family-sustaining jobs. “I got my CNA certification,” Hope states, “but I also got a whole new career. I'm excited to keep climbing.”
